Secured Security Ltd has some suggestions to help you be prepared in the event of an emergency or disaster. It’s important that we all know the risks for the areas that we live in. For example in British Columbia some of the potential disasters we should be prepared for include earthquakes, floods, landslides, avalanches, wildfires, tsunamis, and extreme weather.

It’s important to devise a plan on how to deal with any potential disaster. The possibility of telephone and electricity service being disrupted is likely so these factors need to be taken into account. Always carry a battery powered or wind-up radio so you can tune into local radio stations to access important safety information. Everyone should also have an emergency kit ready. This kit should be able to sustain you and your family for the next 72 hours. An emergency kit should kept in your home, car, and if possible workplace.

A home emergency kit should include some basic necessities. Please keep reading to learn more about some suggestions on what to include in a home emergency kit. One of the most basic elements of a home emergency kit is water. Water may not be available or even be safe to drink during an emergency so it is imperative that clean bottled water is part of the kit. It is suggested to have a minimum of 2 litres per person per day. For a family of four to cover a 72 hour period that would be a minimum of 24 litres. Food is also essential for the kit. Make sure to include food that will not easily spoil such as canned food, freeze dried food, energy bars, and anything else nutritious with a long shelf life. It is important to replace the food and water in your kit at least on a yearly basis and always check expiry dates to make sure all the food and water is in date. Also add a flashlight with extra batteries, candles with matches, and hand sanitizer. A well stocked first aid kit is also beneficial to add to an emergency kit. Make sure anyone with special needs has the supplies they need. If its needed consider adding things such as prescription medication, infant formula, or other medical devices. Another thing to consider is that banks and ATMS may not be available to withdraw cash, so it’s important to add some emergency cash to your emergency kit.

A car emergency kit is also very important, as we do not know where we could be when an emergency arises. Food and water are vital to add, and make sure to replace it about every six months to maintain freshness due to it being exposed at different temperatures in your vehicle. Blankets, candles, matches, and a flashlight are also key to a car emergency kit. A stocked first aid kit with a seat belt cutter and whistle is also suggested. Some other handy things to keep in your vehicle are jumper cables, windshield fluid, cat litter/sand for traction, fire extinguisher, and road flares.

The holiday season can become stressful and busy with all the hustle and bustle of shopping, parties, visitors, and family events. It can easy to let your guard down and forget to take caution in protecting yourself and your family.

The obvious, but one of the most important duties, always ensure ALL doors and windows are locked. In addition, setting lights in your home to turn on with a timer during our you are not home will give the vision to an intruder that someone is likely to be home. Its also important to not leave any expensive household items or wrapped gifts in plain view from the outside of your home. If you are away from home during the holidays, make sure you have a trusted person such as a neighbour regularly inspect your property and remove all newspapers from your front door.

Secured Security also recognises the importance of personal security. Be observant of your surroundings, and of anyone who approaches you. Carry little cash if possible and try to avoid wearing expensive looking jewellery. Avoid walking alone after dark. If you find yourself in a situation walking in the dark, try to find well lit areas that are populated.

At Secured Security, we also want to remind you of Internet safety since there is an abundance of scams and fraudulent emails circling the globe. We suggest that you do not click on links in an unsolicited email as they may contain harmful viruses. Be skeptical of anyone who represents themselves as being from a charitable organization and asking for donations through email or social networking sites. If you do choose to donate, make sure you verify the legitimacy of the organization beforehand. If you participate on social media site, avoid posting that you are on vacation, or are out at a party for the night. Posting your whereabouts could make your home an open invitation to thieves.

Bike Registry Canada and the UK’s Bike Revolution has become Bike Revolution Canada and uses mobile technology to get your two-wheeled ride back.

The registry is free but for $15 you can get three Pulse ID tags which are tamper-resistant and weatherproof. Those tags have barcodes that can be scanned using a smart phone with the proper app.

Shoppers and workers scrambled for cover as shots rang out.

This woman says, “We saw people fighting and security guards running everywhere.”

One of the store owners at the mall said customers ran into her store, saying, ‘There is a gun! There is a gun!’”

Kiersten was right nearby. “I saw this guy run and then he was macing people and this guy pulled out a gun and started shooting at people, and then I ran into the nearest store, and then when I was in the store I just heard people screaming and crying and then the police showed up.”

Nobody was injured by the gun fire, but several people had to be treated after being doused with bear spray. Some people were hiding in stores, until police gave them the all-clear and the shopping centre was evacuated.

The robbers got away, but Vancouver Police later arrested six men suspected in the heist at North Road and Lougheed in Coquitlam.

Constable Lindsey Houghton says the six were part of a case they were working on with Langley mounties. “The men in custody are facing possible weapons and robbery-related charges.”

Houghton won’t say how long they’d been watching the men, but Thomas from Trident Key Mart near the jewellery store in Willowbrook claims police have been keeping an eye on the store for a while now, even today.

“The RCMP’s plainclothes [officers] have been here for over two weeks. The time line was either two or three weeks…they were permitted to close an hour, an hour and-a-half early one day.”
